Sad news out of the wrestling world as iconic WWE broadcaster “Mean” Gene Okerlund has passed away. He was 76.
WWE confirmed Okerlund’s death via their official website. A cause of death has yet to be announced.
Before debuting with the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1984, Okerlund worked with the American Wrestling Association (AWA) for 14 years as a ring announcer. Okerlund would leave WWF for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1993 and work for the promotion for eight years before returning to the WWF, which would become World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for the remainder of his career.
Okerlund’s interview prowess and classic voice have become the anchor of some of the most iconic backstage and in-ring promo moments in WWE history from “Macho Man” Randy Savage, to Hulk Hogan, to Ric Flair and many more.
